John Cena will return to “WWE Raw” tonight to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his debut with the company, in what will be his first appearance since appearing in a dark match at New York’s Madison Square Garden on the 10th September, and for the first time televised appearance since last year’s SummerSlam.
According to the @WrestleVotes Twitter account, the mood behind the scenes in the locker room is positive regarding the return of the 16-time world champion:
“Aside from the obvious uptick in business, I’m told John Cena’s return is as exciting for the locker room as it is for the fans. Cena is seen as the ultimate leader, with his positive presence felt throughout the company when he is around.
WWE celebrated Cena’s birthday throughout June in a variety of ways, having current talent talk about what Cena taught them, seeing them dress up in older versions of the gear. Cena. Cena himself also reviewed his debut and gave his opinion in hindsight.
Cena’s last television appearance for the company came at WWE SummerSlam last year, when he lost in the main event to Roman Reigns in a WWE Championship match. It hasn’t been confirmed exactly what Cena will do on tonight’s show, but a potential showdown with the current United States Champion Theory could end up happening. The pair have exchanged words online for the past few months, with the young wrestler previously claiming Cena was his idol growing up, and the legend praising Theory for his work so far in WWE. However, Theory is currently embroiled in a storyline with Bobby Lashley, with the pair set to collide at WWE’s Money In The Bank with the United States Title on the line.
It’s currently unknown if Cena will be back for another short run and potential match at WWE SummerSlam next month, or if this is just a strict one-time appearance for him.
