Southern Brunswick fuels the atmosphere of New Jersey | Way of life and culture

As you drive through the Township of South Brunswick, New Jersey, you can’t see much to differentiate it from other towns. Chain restaurants, grocery stores, banks and retail stores surround the city’s main roads. If you had to drive across to get to a friend’s house, nothing would stand out to make you think this city is unique. However, once you have taken back roads to take a closer look at your surroundings, the garden part of the “state of the garden” begins to appear.

From Spring to Fall on 505 Ridge Rd., Von Thun Farms is the fifth generation family farm filled with apples, berries, huge pumpkins, spring greenhouse flowers, and a farmer’s market with Angus beef and fresh Jersey produce. . With two apple orchards, there are Golden Delicious, Mutsu, Gala, Cameo, Nittany, Sun Crisp, Stayman, and Fuji apples to pick. They have the apple trees lined up in rows so far you have to squint to see the other side. Their strawberries are as red as a rose, and you can fill buckets of blueberries in as little as 10 minutes from the beautifully grown berry bushes. Not only do blueberries melt in your mouth the second you take a bite of them, the blackberry variety does too.

You’ll want to make sure you don’t skip arm day at the gym, as Von Thun Farms offers lumpy pumpkins, oval pumpkins, and round pumpkins that all need help carrying them around. They always make fantastically carved pumpkins around Halloween time. You can pick them right from the field or grab one in front of their farmer’s market. If you buy one in front of the market, be sure to go there to get the best apple cider donuts in town with a glass of apple cider. The farmers market has more than you can imagine, local honey, jams, jellies, handmade soaps and lotions, fruits, vegetables, grass-fed beef and delicious pies freshly baked. Von Thun Farms has everything you need to supply your home with fresh Jersey foods.

If Von Thun Farms is too far across town and you want a closer market for all the fresh foods, head to the A&C Farmers Market near NJ-27.
