In space, no one can hear you scream. But in a mech suit, you’ll definitely hear dead creatures cracking and crushing under your armored boot. So it is in the new trailer for Negative Atmosphere, a sci-fi horror game that draws more than a few inspirations from Dead Space.
The negative atmosphere was shown back in 2019, and while it sounds pretty derivative, it was nice to see a semi-modern version of the Dead Space formula long before you knew a real The Dead Space remake was coming. You play as Chief Medical Officer Samuel Edwards when things inevitably go wrong and all of your teammates are transformed into elongated monstrosities. Since the initial reveal, developer Sunscorched Studios has expanded its team to 14 developers, and the increase in staff can be seen clearly.
The new trailer features a familiar behind-the-shoulder camera view, with plenty of narrow hallways, ominous lighting, and a totally non-necromorphic thing to hit. Our intrepid astronaut seems a bit more capable than old Isaac Clark, hitting and punching the undead monster with ease. In an appropriate version of the formula, he then finds a cumbersome power suit that audibly crushes an enemy corpse he steps on.
Sunscorched Studios seems to be aiming pretty high compared to most indie horror games. According to the Negative Atmosphere Steam page, players can use Samuel’s medical history to “save the wounded, influence enemies, or modify themselves.” It sounds like an upgrade system to me. There will also be a morality system that will depend more on how you play with Edwards’ pre-established personality than creating your own character. The corrupt bots will even team up with the zombie aliens in their efforts to skewer you.
It’s a tall order, but given how far Negative Atmosphere has come in a few years, I have high hopes. If you want to directly support the development of the game, Sunscorched has its own Patreon.
