‘It’s a taste of home’: Penny Lane Pub offers family atmosphere to English football fans during Euros | Local

After a year of COVID-19 restrictions, the pub’s return to its previously bustling state coincided with this year’s Euro tournament. The fans who arrived 20 minutes after the start of Wednesday’s semi-final listened to Terry tell them there was only standing room – all the tables had been filled long before.

Cries of frustration were sandwiched between cries of ecstasy and glee as England booked their place in their first major tournament final since the 1966 World Cup.

“You can watch a game anywhere, [but] we come here because it’s a great place, ”said Bryan Doane. “It’s like a home away from home, and it’s where we all come together and can just be ourselves and be a family.”

At the opening whistle, a waiter exclaimed “it’s coming home” as he passed a group of fans decked out in English gear. And by the end of extra time and England’s 2-1 win over Denmark, the packed pub was singing the famous theme song “It’s coming home”.

Many were happy to be back in a familiar atmosphere to which they have become accustomed on match day for 15 years. Penny Lane is first and foremost a Liverpool pub, but no one discriminates. Fans from Chelsea, Tottenham, Manchester United and other clubs come to the pub during the Premier League season.

Laura Greaves, who is American, knew nothing about football until her husband Andrew Greaves, who is English, began to bring her to Penny Lane.
