Dodger Stadium had a playoff-like atmosphere for the Mets series opener

Trea Turner was among the few bright spots for the Los Angeles Dodgers as they were swept by the Pittsburgh Pirates, and he contributed to their 2-0 win over the New York Mets on Thursday. The game was the first of the season between the teams with the two best National League records.

Turner’s first double in the sixth inning extended his hitting streak to an MLB-best 25 games and eventually led to a run when Justin Turner connected for a two-out extra hit. “We knew we were better than what we were playing at,” Trea Turner said after the win.

“Tonight wasn’t necessarily the best, but you have to win in different ways. The pitching was really, really special for us. Tony (Gonsolin) was really good, the bullpen was really good and we got that win.

During a postgame interview with Kirsten Watson on SportsNet LA, Gavin Lux said the atmosphere at Dodger Stadium felt like a playoff game. The series opener drew a reported attendance of 48,018 for Justin Turner’s replica jersey party.

“A little,” Trea Turner replied when asked if he felt more playoff intensity playing against the Mets.

“I would say it was a bit different because they played good baseball. Like us, apart from the last matches. Two of baseball’s best records go against each other and could be a potential road game, and just a good baseball team, so it was a bit more intense. It was fun.”

Turner familiar with the Mets

Having spent most of his career in Eastern Newfoundland, Turner has seen plenty of Mets over the years.

“I think there are a lot of familiar faces, but there are always new guys. I faced a new pitcher tonight, so a bit of both,” he said. “You kind of know what to expect, but I feel like it’s a different team than in years past.

“It’s funny when me and Freddie (Freeman) play NL East, I feel like we’ve played these teams a million times, but they just change a bit.”
