EACH week we focus on local watering holes and places in East Lancashire.
This time we chat with John Meadows about the newly refurbished Brown Cow in Blackburn and how they enjoy the atmosphere of this popular venue.

How long have you been an owner/proprietor?
A month – but was at Hare and Hounds in Lammack for three or four years, then Quarrymans on Dukes Brow for two years
Bar staff and their names:
Becky, Kirsty, Lisa, Tim, CJ, Andy and Jasmine
Give us a little history about the pub
It’s a well-known football pub, not to mention that of the locals. We have made lots of new friends and seem to fit in well. We are more active than behind the bar. It was sad to see such a good pub not open
Is food served? So what’s on the menu?
We do not serve food
Is there a beer garden?
Yes there is a beer garden and we look forward to the hot summer months as it is a bit of a sun trap. We have about 11 tables and a parking lot that we hope to use more of.
Do you have darts/snooker/pool teams?
We have registered a pool team but are looking to add another as well as a darts team.
The most popular drink served is:
Purely on volume, it must be Fosters, but Staropramen is also very popular. We have a gin shed which is busy on Friday and Saturday evenings.
Most memorable moment at the pub
It must be when we reopened the pub and welcomed locals through the doors. Our first Rovers game was also busy. We had a really good day last Saturday with the early kick-off but that meant the Rovers fans left and then the locals came and it’s great to have a good mix.
Do you have entertainment programming?
Most Saturdays we have a disco and karaoke and are looking to host comedy nights. We would also like to have an artist on.
Have you encountered any challenges within the industry
It is still early, there will be challenges all along the line. We had comments from Rovers fans about our panel color being burgundy, but we spoke to the Craft Union about it and they will fix it. They were brilliant with us.
The best thing about running a pub is:
It has to be the atmosphere and seeing people having a good time. A lot of people are our friends and that’s good. There is a great vibe at the brown cow which is great to be a part of
The worst thing about running a pub is…
it must be the hours
The perfect cure for a hangover is…
A good breakfast or a fry
